MOWED THE HOMESTEAD

WE MOWED THE HOMESTEAD TODAY. IT WAS HOT AND DUSTY. THE LITTLE APPLE TREES THAT WERE PLANTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND GOT DAMAGED BY DEERS, HAS A FEW SMALL APPLES ON THEM. I PLAN TO PRUNE THEM AND PUT CARDBOARD AND GRASS CLIPPINGS AROUND THEM THIS FALL. I SAW DAVID THE GOOD DO THIS. I THINK HE CALLED IT "FOREST GARDENING."

Slim Pickings Homestead

Slim Pickings:

noun

  1. A small amount, paucity; especially in reference to money.

Slim Pickings describes us and our Homestead. We are gradually improving the Homestead, but we still have much more to do. Lack of money and lack of help has made progress very slow. I keep hoping my needs will improve so I can get this Homestead growing and producing.

Mowed The Homestead

Mowed the Homestead today. A small bird followed me while I was mowing. It never offered to fly away; it was searching for food. Also strung a cable across the driveway to stop people from using it to turn around. People have been turning in the driveway and they have damaged the gravel.

Sprayed Weed/Grass Kill At The Homestead

July 10, 2023, I sprayed weed/grass kill on certain areas of the property I thought would help lessen the weed-eating and save the weed-eater from extra labor. The driveway gets overrun with grass and weeds pretty quickly. Another thing I discovered was, people are using the new driveway to turn around. They are doing great damage to the driveway. I plan to stretch a cable across the driveway until I can afford gates and the time to swing them. It is a shame how some people will take advantage of others property.

Hoping To Grow Longterm Food Sources

Somewhere between April 9, 2023 and April 15, 2023, we planted 10 Mary Washington Asparagus, 5 Ozark Beauty Strawberry, 5 Eversweet Strawberry at the Homestead.

Mowed The Homestead

This post is late, partly because of computer trouble. We mowed and weed-eat the Homestead on April 24, 2023. It wasn't grown up too badly but would have been soon if not mowed when we did.

I mowed a spot where I hope to put a small garden this year. It will be a start, and hopefully next year I can add on to the garden (enlarge it).

I've Been Thinking

I don't like this, but at this point in time I am convinced that I am nothing more than a hobby homesteader. I can't afford the equipment and help that I need to make this a real homestead. My body and strength aren't what they used to be. I get discouraged not being able to accomplish what I need to accomplish.

Spread Fertilizer To The Orchard

February 26, 2023, we spread fertilizer to our orchard. The pear trees were budding out nicely. Hope the good Lord gives us a bountiful harvest this year.
